Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of the successful wrapper ‘Lil Wayne’ looking down away from the camera. It is a medium close up shot showing his head, shoulders and part of his arms. He is sitting on something not. The background of this photo is a mixture of a grey and brown colour and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine cover. Directly on top of ‘Lil Wayne’s’ head there is a masthead. And in front of him there are 4 separate cover lines in white accompanied with a black outline to the font. The photographed man’s name is in white.
Masthead:
The rolling stones Masthead are very unique: yellow with white out lining and black drop shadow. The font used is a serif font and after the first letter each word, the lower case letter join up to each other. The word rolling stone derives from a proverb ‘A rolling stone gathers no moss’ this suggests anti-establishment. In addition to this the rolling stones are a very famous and long running band. This suggests that this particular magazine has usage of words from the past. All of the music artists who have appeared on the front cover of this magazine have had reputations of having rock and roll lifestyles. Making the view on the magazine seem hard and dangerous. The name ‘rolling stones’ tells the audience that this magazine is music based.
Character:
The photograph is of ‘Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr.’ otherwise well known as successful Rapper, songwriter ‘lil Wayne’.
Composition:
He is posed in a humble way as there is lack of eye contact with the audience; this implies that there is a sense of vulnerability that the artist is trying to portray. In addition to this the Artist is also achieving vulnerability by the way he is facing down.
Costume:
As we are only able to see the top half of the artist as an audience we can see that the artist does not have any item of clothing on him. All the audience are able to see are the various amount of body art he has. The reason for the artist not to wear an item of clothing was probably to show his edgy side through the front cover so that the audience instantly get an edgy vibe.
Non verbal communication:
The non verbal communication is very relaxed and humble; the artist is not making any eye contact with the camera and is slanting his head down. This is suggestive of the artist wanting to give of a sense of innocence and humbleness.
Lighting:
The lighting in this particular magazine is very subtle and not bright.
Setting:
There is no setting to this particular magazine; however the subtle background connotes calmness and tranquillity like how the artist is trying to portray himself in the front cover.
Cover- lines:
The main cover –line that relates to the Artists photograph says: ‘lil Wayne goes rock’. This relates to the Artists new album ‘Carter IV’ as this particular album was heavily rock influenced. And the album also featured other successful rock artists on the album. The minor cover-line under the main one then goes on to say: ‘rap genius changes his game’. This cove line is reference to ‘lil Wayne’s new single featuring music artist ‘Niki Minaj’ the song knock out is very different from what the rap artist usually does, there is very rock base theme to the song which sounds extremely different to something he would usually lay on a track. The rest of the cover lines tell the audience about different things the magazine is going to be featuring. For example the cover line ‘prince’ this tells the audience that ’prince’ there will be a section on prince. The different minor cover lines explore different genre of music, as this particular magazine is rolling stone. Rolling stone as a publishing company is well known for its diverse way of representing all music genres. For example in this magazine the audience can see that prince, ‘Allman Brothers’ and the rap artist ‘lil wayne.’ Are all from different music genres they all represent different type of music this shows the audience that the magazine is assorted and are open to different people who are into a whole range of music.
Target audience:
Looking at all the points made the most likely target audience would be both male and female. Between the ages of 15-35. The reason for this is because this particular generation will have good awareness about the variety of music the magazine portrays. In addition to this, the age range of the target audience are likely to be able to read and and have interest in different genres of music.
